Fowles on The Magus and "Fictional Lifestyles"

A gentleman named Hank Mishkoff recently submitted the following to the web site. In light of today's reality TV and celebrity worship, Fowles' comments seem particularly apropro.

"I've attached a scan of a letter I received from John Fowles in 1971 -- I just stumbled across it this evening, and I thought you might be interested. Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the letter I sent to him, to which he was responding. I believe that I referenced the passage at the end of 'The Magus' where Nicholas is surprised to realize that nobody is watching him; I asked Fowles if he felt that, because of the pervasive influence of television, we have become accustomed to watching people perform -- and that as a result we have come to subconsciously believe that *we* are being watched and are ourselves performing."
