Searching For a Passage

Postby Rainbowler on Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:19 am

Greetings -

For quite some time now I have been paging through the book (four or five times) unsuccessfully
trying to find the passage which starts:
"Perhaps all this is getting at the heart of Englishness .. being happier at being unhappy,
than doing something constructive to change it .."
and ending something like:
" .. and the poverty of nuance in even the most semantically advanced American equivalent"

Would be grateful for any help ..

Many thanks

Thanks for posting your query. The material you quote is found toward the end of the novel's 7th chapter, "Passage," pp. 73-4 in the 1977 Signet paperback.
