Time Magazine's Best 100 Novels Includes The
French Lieutenant's Woman
On October 16, 2005, Time Magazine announced its list of
100 Best Novels, and The French Lieutenant's Woman was
included.
Lev Grossman and Richard Lacayo, Time's book critics,
followed two ground rules. They picked 1923--when
Time began publishing--as the starting point. And they
focused on books written in English. That's why their list
does not include books such as Ulysses (published in
1922) or One Hundred Years of Solitude (originally
written in Spanish).

This is the second major top 100 list that has included a
John Fowles title; The Modern Library's Top 100
English-language novels of the 20th Century included The
