The Devil’s Chain
By Edward Jenkins (William Mullan & Son, 1877). Very good in brown boards with fading to lower corner of front and rear board; flyleaf missing. A "lurid story" of the evils of alcoholism. With a long and amusing signed presentation inscription from Fowles on the half title, thanking the intended recipient for a book: "I felt bound to send you something of equal seriouisness, especially as I noticed you had three dry martinis at one of our lunches…". Fowles has also "doctored" the printed dedication and altered one of the illustrations to depict (probably) two of the staff at his American publishers. Perhaps he felt the inscription lacked tact; at any rate, the gift was never given.
